It's Getting Drafty

By Thomas Jeffrey Article Posted: Saturday December 23, 2006

In perhaps a sign of what is to come or just an incredible coincidence, the United States Selective Service System, used to determine which young men with be conscripted into the Armed Forces, will soon be conducting a “readiness excerise” of its process.

The Area Office Mobilization Prototype Exercise, the official title of the process and which hasn’t been up and running since 1998, will be performing a mock exercise in which it will randomly select draftees by birth date and well as prepare its network of appeal boards to deal with conscientious objectors and others who wish to delay their entry into the Armed Forces.

A lot of rhetoric has been generated over the past few weeks — on both sides of the aisle — as to how to solve the epidemic of shrinking ranks in the US Military. And even though the issue of reinstating the draft has been discussed, according to Scott Campbell, the director of operations and chief information officer for the Selective Service, those discussions have not prompted the scheduling of the test, nor has any official word come from Washington to bring the conscription process back on line in the United States.

But with the Smirking POTUS continuing to define the War on Terror as a generational conflict, look for the big brains inside the beltway to begin to take a closer look at the draft as a simple way to wash their hands of making any tough decisions over what to do with our ailing military. After all, taking the easy way out is item number one in any politician’s creed.
