Another Day, Another Scandal

The trials and tribulations that the Bush Administration have had to endure over the dismissal of 7 U.S. Attorneys shows no signs of abating, and the shifting sands of just who will emerge as the scapegoat for this fiasco has got everyone guessing — including this Leftwing Nutjob.

The slow buildup in the press prior to last week’s congressional testimony by the dismissed prosecutors was filled with all of the intrigue and suspense that you’d find in a good summer read — lies, administration cover ups, admissions of guilt, and an healthy dose of congressional grandstanding.

GOP Senator Pete Domenici got the ball rolling when he admitted to long-standing allegations that he had indeed contacted ousted New Mexico federal prosecutor David Iglesias regarding any possible indictments against a state Democratic official prior to last year’s elections. And while Mr. Domenici admits to calling Mr. Iglesias — though he denies that he asked for any particular outcome from the former prosecutor — the DOJ confirmed that the Senator had also logged complaints with their office regarding Mr. Iglesias and his inability to effectively do his job.

Mr. Iglesias testified before Congress last Tuesday and stated that he felt “leaned on” by Mr. Domenici to deliver an indictment before last November — a situation that he stated made him “sick to his stomach.” Other ousted prosecutors also testified to Congress over their own run-ins with Bush Administration apologists who were tasked with grading all 93 US Attorneys on, among others things, their loyalty to President Bush.

Faced with mounting questions from both Democrats and Republicans, as well an ever-increasing paper trail leading right on up to the White House door, the search began in earnest for a fall guy — someone to make the whole stinking mess go away. The lucky candidate — former White House counsel and Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers — was selected last Wednesday and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales fingered the longtime Bush confidant during a press conference to deflect charges of his own complicity as the chief architect of the plan.

But late last week, the White House “retreated” from those initial allegations of blaming poor old Ms. Miers as the evil mastermind behind the whole sordid plot when official mouthpiece Tony “Snowjob” Snow came before the podium and stated that memories over at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are “a bit hazy” over the entire thing. Perhaps Ms. Miers called in a few chits from her early days as W’s personal attorney or even reminded him that she helped all those questions about his National Guard service go away back in 2000. But at any rate, this Leftwing Nutjob finds it amusing that the White House must know that claiming collective amnesia is only one step away from the Scooter Libby defense strategy — and well saw how well that worked out for Cheney’s former chief of staff.

But with the allegations of impropriety by Gonzales and the Justice Department reaching a fever pitch while the Smirking POTUS was on the road in Central and South American last week may have been the real reason why the White House seems so off it’s game in regards to responding to these allegations. It’s either that, or the reality of the situation is that this morass may be so diabolically true that there really is no way for the White House to spin it.

And with the resignation last Monday of Mr. Gonzales’ top aide D. Kyle Sampson — who had a number of email exchanges with Ms. Miers over the number of attorneys to remove from office — the controversy has continued to dog the Attorney General, especially in light of his adamant denial that he knew nothing of what was going on within the very department that he leads. And even though he has stated that he has no intentions of resigning (even sinking so low as to use the race card) this Leftwing Nutjob believes that when the going gets tough, the ultimate test of loyalty for any Bush Administration lackey is whether or not they will fall on their sword for their beloved president.

That time may have arrived for Mr. Gonzales, whether he wants to admit or not.
