Bigotry Denied

Opponents of gay marriage were rebuffed this past week as a move by the Massachusetts Family Institute failed to get enough votes in the legislature to put a proposed constitutional amendment before voters next November.
The referendum, which would have defined marriage as a union solely between a man and woman, came within just five votes of approval this past Thursday. The legislature, which had been bombarded by calls and letters of support for the existing law, in the end voted to scuttle the many months of work by the Institute, which had devoted themselves to the cause of codifying bigotry in the Bay State.
Since same-sex marriage was legalized by Massachusetts in 2004 it still remains the only state within the country to allow such unions, with records indicating that some 8500 gay and lesbian couples have been wed there over the past 3 years.
Critics of the ban will now have to wait until 2012 before attempting to once again to amend Massachusetts’ constitution.
