Secretary of State Robert Gates called for increased government spending on Monday, not for new weapons or advanced military hardware, but rather for the tools of diplomacy. Mr. Gates, while speaking at Kansas State University, contrasted the Pentagon’s $500 billion military budget with that of the State Department’s — just a measley $36 billion — and stated that the United States has other means with which to affect change within the world, specifically through diplomatic and economic assistance programs as well as by good ol’ fashioned one-to-one communication between nations.
