Good Night, Funny Man

Former high school cheerleader and current Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott announced on Monday that he will resign his seat before the end of the year. The surprise announcement has fueled speculation that the Mississippi good ol’ boy has chosen cold hard cash over principles as he has decided to get out of town just before new rules take affect next year that would bar any lobbying by former Congressmen and women for two years after leaving their job on Capitol Hill. The current law limits lawmakers to only one year of sitting on their hands before they hang out a shingle on K-S Street. Mr. Lott’s departure makes him the six Republican senator to head for the hills over recent months, themselves all members of the former GOP majority that ruled inside the beltway for some 16 years. It also raised the number of US Senate seats that the Republicans have to defend in next year’s election to a hefty 23.
