Venezuelan president Hugo Chevez is experiencing something that is quite unfamiliar to him within his own country — opposition. The South American president’s bid to change his country’s Constitution once again, this time removing term limits for the presidency as well as heavily centralizing his authority, is being met with strong resistance by both the public and by members of his own political party. And in an indication that Mr. Chavez senses that the upcoming referendum may not quite go his way, the Venezuelan government recently decided not to invite international observers to watch over this weekend’s polling. Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley was unavailable for comment.
