See You In Court

The Environmental Protection Agency is the target of a lawsuit filed in federal court this past Wednesday by twelve states over its decision to weaken regulations with regards to the storage and release of toxic chemicals. The requirements, part of the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory program, had for twenty years required US companies to report and inventory the storage and release of toxic compounds in excess of 500 pounds. The new rules “streamlined” the process for companies, reducing the amount of paperwork they are required to submit to the agency and raised the chemical reporting level to 5000 pounds. The lawsuit was prompted by local officials in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and nine others who use the reports to help keep track of just what is being released into their communities.
