US Navy Admirals on Tuesday briefed reporters on two separate incidents in which the Chinese government refused to allow three naval ships into Hong Kong harbor and chastised Beijing’s actions as not being indicative of a responsible nation that understood their international obligations. In one incident, two minesweepers that were seeking protection from an approaching severe weather system but were turned away, forcing the crews to ride the storm out in the middle of the Pacific. The other incident involved an aircraft carrier which had already been cleared to dock in the port of Hong Kong during the Thanksgiving holiday. In each case, the Chinese government refused to offer any explanation, something that the admirals called “perplexing” and “troublesome.”
Later in the week, a Chinese government representative offered an explanation for his government refusing the port calls, citing the official state visit by the Dalai Lama in October as well as the sale of Patriot missile batteries as the real reason behind their actions.
