I Am A Mormon

Using the George Bush Presidential Library as his backdrop, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney defended his Mormon faith on Thursday by stating that while he is devoted to his religion, he pledged to not take cues from any church official if he were elected. The 20-minute speech, given to ostensibly quiet criticism about his Mormon faith amongst evangelicals, ironically only mentioned his religion by name only once and instead spoke in broad strokes about the importance of faith in this country. Supporters of the former Massachusetts’s governor sought to compare Mr. Romney’s speech to a similar one given by then-presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in 1960, who sought to allay fears about his Catholic faith with the nation’s voters.
