Shame, Shame

By Thomas Jeffrey Article Posted: Sunday December 9, 2007

The Central Intelligence Agency admitted destroying two video tapes that chronicled the interrogation of two al-Qaeda prisoners by company personnel. The existence of the tapes, revealed in a statement to Agency employees by their director, General Michael Hayden, was apparently revealed only because the New York Times had informed the CIA of its intent to publish an article about them. General Hayden defended the tapes’ destruction, primarily as a means to protect those agents shown in them as well as the fact that they were deemed to no longer have any intelligence value. The tapes were destroyed some two years after the 911 Commission officially requested any such evidence from the CIA during its investigation of the terrorist attacks. The revelation has prompted threats of an official investigation by both the Senate and the House on the ground of possible obstruction of justice charges against the Agency.
