Checkmate

Russian president Vladimir Putin this week made clear his intentions for maintaining his grip on power after his Constitutionally-restricted two-term run is up next year — by announcing a loyalist to his current post who in turn endorsed Putin as the new Prime Minister. Dmitry Medvedev, a longtime friend and political ally, waited a whole day after being given the nod by Putin before returning the favor by appearing on nationwide television to endorse his boss as the best man for keeping Russia safe and secure and the country’s next PM. Critics of the Kremlin weren’t surprised by the move, as they had anticipated that the former KGB official would somehow devise a means with which to keep his foot in the door at the Kremlin, but wondered whether Putin would butt heads with Medvedev, something of a headstrong man himself, over the coming years.
