Agreement

The European Union settled some cantankerous issues with regards to the fledgling organization on Thursday, when its members agreed to create the permanent position of president in order to give the continent of Europe a more consistent voice on the world stage. The creation of the position, which will include a term of two and a half years, was part of an overhaul of the existing EU treaty, which had some trouble attracting supporters amongst both the French and the Dutch. In addition to the presidency, a majority vote will also be instituted for most EU decisions, replacing the rules which called for unanimous vote, which critics saw as a major stumbling block in getting the organization to reach any kind of substantive agreement.
