Just 3 weeks after her announcement that she was suffering form lung cancer and would not seek reelection in 2008, U.S. Representative from Indiana Julia Carson passed away on Saturday at the age of 69. The African-American Democrat, who has hoped to serve out her term in the House but had been away from Washington since September, was a supporter of both women’s and children’s causes and was a voice opponent of the Iraq War.
