Pulling The Plug
By Thomas JeffreyArticle Posted: Sunday December 16, 2007
Garry Kasparov pulled the plug on his run to become the next Russian president on Wednesday, mostly due to what the former World Chess Champion says were dirty tricks by the Kremlin that prevented him from fulfilling all the requirements under Russian law to become a valid presidential candidate. According to a spokesperson for Mr. Kasparov, the final blow came in the form of pressure from the Kremlin upon landlords in and around Moscow that prevented his campaign from renting a hall large enough to hold his nominating convention, a charge that the Russian government denies. Mr. Kasparov’s candidacy appeared to be doomed from the start, with him being denied access to the state news agency, continual harassment and arrests of his followers by the government, and the forced committal of one of his top political organizers to an insane asylum.
