A Tangled Web

A dirty little secret had been emerging in Pakistan over the past few weeks that has now been wiped from the radar of news agencies around the world due to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto — a secret that could help explain Washington’s love affair with President Pervez Musharraf.
According to Human Rights agencies and sources within Pakistan, Musharraf has been quietly spiriting away both terrorism suspects and political enemies under the auspices of fighting the War on Terror within that country, and in some cases, turning these same Pakistani nationals over to the CIA without any extradition hearings. The detentions have come to light as more and more of these cases were being challenged in Pakistani courts and, due to the lack of evidence, the accused are now being set free. This issue was also apparently a major reason why President Musharraf’s dismissed of Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry over the summer.
The former detainees have been sworn to secrecy about their detentions and with a possible new state of emergency on the verge of being declared, don’t look for any more information on this issue any time soon.
