Saudi Arabian newspapers have reported that the young woman who was raped after being pulled from a car while meeting with her former boyfriend has been pardoned by King Abdullah. The 20-year old woman, who has been identified only as the “Qatif girl”, was to have received 200 lashings for her “moral turpitude” — specifically for being alone in the presence of a man who was not her husband. The pardon is a rare rebuke of the Saudi courts by the King and is being viewed by critics as a possible signal of future reforms within that middle eastern country.
