Condemned

By Thomas Jeffrey Article Posted: Thursday January 24, 2008

KABUL – The Taliban may no longer be in power in Afghanistan, but their hard-line religious dogma carries on, with a tribal court in the northern part of that country on Tuesday sentencing a journalism student to death for the crime of insulting Islam. The 23-year old student’s offense appears to be centered upon an newspaper article he printed critical of Prophet Muhammad and the treatment of women under Islam. However, reports also indicate that the student had also been critical of a local militia leader in the local paper — a man who also happens to serve in the local government. The student is the third person to be condemned to death for blasphemy by Afghan Islamic clerics in the six years since the Taliban were removed from power.
