MOSCOW — Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has weighed in over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strong arm tactics regarding that country’s upcoming elections.
Speaking to a reporter about the Kremlin’s recent rejection of former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov’s candidacy, Mr. Gorbachev observed that something was amiss with his country’s electoral system and that it needed “a major adjustment.” Interestingly, the former president’s remarks were not reported on by Russian television news broadcasts and were delayed by a full day before being carried by that country’s Interfax news agency.
Mr. Gorbachev is no stranger to controversy, as he has been a staunch supporter supporter of independent news sources within Russia, including the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, whose vehement criticism of Mr. Putin often draws the ire of the Russian President.
