The Gates and Rice Show

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Defense Secretary Robert Gates slipped and fell on some ice outside of his suburban Washington, D.C. home this past Tuesday night and fractured his upper right arm, prompting a visit to the rarefied air of the Bethesda Naval Medical Center’s E.R.
But adding insult to the secretary’s injury was the fact that Mr. Gates has just returned from a week-long European and Middle-Eastern junket, where he attempted to persuade some of the more gun-shy members of NATO to begin actively participating in combat operations in Afghanistan — a plea that, according to observers, has mostly fallen on deaf ears.
The secretary also met with Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s president, and attempted to assuage that former oil executive’s concerns that he his country is not slowly circling the Taliban toilet. No word on how those discussions went…
Mr. Gates wasn’t the only Bush Administration official in Europe last week, however, with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also racking up the frequent flyer miles on the tax payer’s dime with visits to both her British and French counterparts. The topic of those discussions? You guessed it — the war in Afghanistan.
This Leftwing Nutjob wonders where was all this concern about Afghanistan by the Bush Administration five years ago? Oh that’s right, they were sidetracked by a little thing called the Saddam-Hussein-Tried-To-Kill-My-Daddy-So-I’m-Gonna-Kick-His-Ass-Iraq-Detour.
