From Russia With Love

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin remains full of himself as he and his hand-picked successor coast to an all but certain victory in that country’s “elections” next month — so much so that the soon-to-be premier wasn’t above upstaging a seemingly innocuous news conference with his Ukrainian counterpart with the implicit threat of nuclear war with his neighbors to the west.

During a question and answer session with the press following the signing of an agreement between Gazprom — Russia’s government-owned natural gas company — and the Ukrainian government, which assured that that country would continue to be able to heat their homes for the rest of the winter, Mr. Putin stated that it would be “horrible” to think that he may have to point his country’s nuclear weapons at the Ukraine due to their proposed membership in NATO.

The statement was made in response to a question regarding the possible deployment of a missile defense system in northern Ukraine — something that the Pentagon and the Smirking POTUS maintain would be a valuable deterrent against rogue nations or terrorist groups launching nuclear weapons against Europe or the United States.

Mr. Putin’s long-standing aversion to the deployment of any missile defense system in eastern Europe, whether it be in the Ukraine, Poland, or the Czech Republic, had been a source of tension between Moscow and Washington, even though the Pentagon and the Bush Administration have offered the Russian government both concessions and incentives to help assuage the Russian president’s concerns.

This Leftwing Nutjob believes that Mr. Putin’s intransigence is merely political expediency that he learned from the Smirking POTUS. He has no doubt observed from the way our Congress has reacted to Mr. Bush’s demands over the past seven years that a complete unwillingness to compromise and a wholesale disregard for your country’s laws can get you everything you want when the will of the people is ignored by their elected officials in Washington — like immunity for telephone companies that break the law.
