Miscarriage of Justice?
By Thomas JeffreyArticle Posted: Saturday February 16, 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last week it was revealed in court documents that two attorneys for the Justice Department knew about the CIA’s destruction of terrorist interrogation video tapes since some time in early 2006 — an indication that more people knew about the fate of the VHS cassettes than has been previously indicated. The tapes have been described by those in the know to show harsh interrogation techniques — and perhaps water boarding — being carried out on suspected al-Qaeda terrorists in secret locations overseas.
The revelation raises questions as to not only what did the DOJ know and when did they know it, but whether or not that agency can be objective enough about itself and its own actions in the case to conduct an impartial investigation as to why the tapes were destroyed against the advice of DOJ, CIA, and White House counsel.
Defense lawyers for many of the enemy combatants being currently held at Guatanomo Bay, and well as for convicted felon Zacarias Moussaoui, maintain that the tapes perhaps contained crucial evidence that can or could have been used by their clients at trial. Counsel for the accused also maintain that by withholding said tapes, Justice Department attorneys may have obstructed justice — a claim that, if proven, could raise possibility of a mistrial being declared in their cases.
The news also prompted Democrats to renew their calls for a special prosecutor to be named in the case by AG Michael Mukasey, something that, so far, he has refused to do. And as this story keeps going deeper and deeper down the proverbial rabbit hole, this Leftwing Nutjob predicts that even more twists and turns await the American people as a full account of the conduct by a secret arm of the CIA still remains to be told.
Somebody get Beau Bridges’ agent on the phone, I smell a plum role in the inevitable movie-of-the-week to be up for grabs sometime soon.
